Speed, Distance & Time Calculator Widget

Add a speed, distance and time calculator to your website. Visitors choose what to find, enter the other two in the units they use - km, miles, metres or nautical miles, km/h, mph, m/s or knots - and get the answer with conversions and the matching pace.

How it works

The three quantities are tied by one relationship - distance equals speed times time - so any two give the third. The widget converts everything to kilometres and hours with the exact definitions NIST lists (the international mile is 1.609344 km and the nautical mile 1.852 km, so a knot is 1.852 km/h), solves, and shows the result in several units, plus the pace in minutes per km and per mile that runners and walkers use. Time is entered as hours, minutes and seconds, any of which may exceed 59, and long results are shown in days, hours, minutes and seconds. A sailing leg of 26.2 nautical miles in two hours, for example, is 13.1 knots or 24.26 km/h.

Calculation method

  • Speed = distance / time; distance = speed x time; time = distance / speed
  • 1 mile = 1.609344 km; 1 nautical mile = 1.852 km; 1 knot = 1.852 km/h; 1 m/s = 3.6 km/h
  • Pace (min per km) = time in minutes / distance in km; per mile = time / distance in miles
  • Speeds shown to 2 decimals; times to the nearest second

Worked examples

Driving time

Inputs: Find time: 150 km at 75 km/h

Result: 2 h 00 min 00 s (120 min)

150 / 75 = 2 h.

Sailing leg in knots

Inputs: Find speed: 26.2 nautical miles in 2 h

Result: 13.1 knots = 24.26 km/h = 15.08 mph = 6.74 m/s

26.2 / 2 = 13.1 kn; x 1.852 = 24.26 km/h.

Limitations

  • Straight arithmetic on an average speed: acceleration, stops, traffic, currents and wind are not modelled.
  • Distances are taken as given; the widget does not measure routes or great-circle distances.
  • For aircraft and boats the answer is speed over the ground; airspeed or speed through the water differs by the headwind, tailwind or current component, which is not modelled.

Where publishers use it

  • School maths and physics lessons on speed, distance and time
  • Travel blogs estimating driving or cycling times
  • Sailing and aviation sites working in knots and nautical miles
  • Running and cycling clubs

Questions

How do I work out travel time?

Choose Time, enter the distance and your average speed. 150 km at 75 km/h is 2 hours.

Does it account for stops?

No. It assumes a constant average speed; add breaks separately or use an average speed that already includes them.

What is a knot?

One nautical mile per hour. The nautical mile is exactly 1,852 metres, originally based on one minute of latitude, which is why it is used at sea and in aviation.

Why does the average speed of a round trip differ from the average of the two speeds?

Because the slower leg takes longer. 60 km out at 60 km/h (1 h) and back at 30 km/h (2 h) is 120 km in 3 h - 40 km/h, not 45.

Can I enter the time in minutes only?

Yes. Leave hours at 0 and type the minutes and/or seconds; values above 59 are accepted.

How fast is a 10-second 100 metre sprint?

100 m in 10 s is 10 m/s. Multiply by 3.6 for km/h: 36 km/h, or 22.37 mph and 19.44 knots - the widget shows all four when you choose metres and seconds.
