Tile Calculator Widget

Put a tile calculator on a tile shop, bathroom-renovation or DIY page. Visitors enter the area, the tile size and the grout joint and get the tile count with a cut allowance, the boxes to buy and, if they add a box price, the cost of the tiles.

How it works

Every tile occupies its own face plus one grout joint in each direction, so the widget divides the area by (tile length + joint) x (tile width + joint) rather than by the bare tile. With 300 x 300 mm tiles and a 3 mm joint that footprint is 0.091809 m², which turns 12 m² into 130.7 tiles before any cutting allowance - about three fewer than the joint-free sum suggests. The cut allowance is then added and the result rounded up to whole tiles; tiles per box rounds it up again to whole boxes and shows how many spares are left. A second rectangle covers an L-shaped room, a shower niche or a splashback. Metric mode takes metres, centimetres and a joint in millimetres; imperial takes feet, inches and an inch joint such as 1/8 (0.125). A half-filled second area, a zero tile size or a negative joint is refused.

Calculation method

  • Area = length x width (+ second length x second width)
  • Tile footprint = (tile length + joint) x (tile width + joint)
  • Tiles = ceil(area / footprint x (1 + waste / 100))
  • Boxes = ceil(tiles / tiles per box); cost = boxes x price per box
  • Units: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 in = 25.4 mm

Worked examples

Bathroom floor

Inputs: 4 x 3 m; 30 x 30 cm tiles; 3 mm joints; 10% waste; 10 tiles per box at 25

Result: 144 tiles, 15 boxes, cost 375

12 m² / 0.091809 m² = 130.7 tiles; x 1.10 = 143.8, rounded up to 144; 144 / 10 = 14.4, rounded up to 15 boxes.

Kitchen floor in feet

Inputs: 12 x 10 ft; 12 x 12 in tiles; 1/8 in joints; 10% waste

Result: 130 tiles

120 sq ft / 1.0209 sq ft per tile = 117.5; x 1.10 = 129.3, rounded up to 130.

Limitations

  • Rectangles only; curved walls, circular features and complex outlines need to be split into rectangles by hand.
  • The cut allowance is a flat percentage - it does not lay out the room or count the cut pieces at the edges.
  • Grout, adhesive, spacers, trims and backer board are not estimated.

Where publishers use it

  • A tile retailer's product page, preset to that tile's size and box quantity
  • Bathroom and kitchen remodelling guides that walk through a floor or splashback
  • A tiler's quote request page so customers arrive knowing their tile count
  • Pool, patio and terrace paving posts using large-format porcelain
  • Property-flipping blogs budgeting a refurbishment room by room

Questions

How much extra tile should I buy for cuts?

About 10% for a straight lay in a simple rectangle, 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many corners, and more for large-format tiles where one broken piece is a big share. Keep a few spare tiles for future repairs, because a later batch rarely matches.

Why does the grout joint change the tile count?

Each tile plus its joint covers more than the tile alone. A 12 x 12 in tile with a 1/8 in joint covers 1.0209 sq ft, so 120 sq ft needs 117.5 tiles before waste instead of 120.

How do I tile an L-shaped room?

Split it into two rectangles and enter the second one as the second area. For a 4 x 3 m room with a 2 x 1 m alcove, the widget adds 12 m² and 2 m² to make 14 m².

Can I use it for a wall or splashback?

Yes. Enter the wall width and height as the area, subtract windows by using a smaller rectangle, and use the wall tile size. A 3 x 0.6 m splashback is 1.8 m²: with 100 x 100 mm tiles and 2 mm joints that is about 173 tiles before waste.

Should I round to whole boxes?

Yes - shops sell whole boxes. With 144 tiles and 10 per box you need 15 boxes and have 6 spares. Ask whether unopened boxes can be returned before buying a big surplus.

What joint width is normal?

Rectified porcelain is often laid with 2-3 mm joints, ordinary floor tiles with 3-5 mm and rustic or handmade tiles with 6-10 mm; follow the tile maker's minimum.

How much grout will I need?

Grout volume depends on joint width, joint depth (usually the tile thickness) and tile size: narrow joints with large tiles use very little. Grout makers print coverage tables per bag by tile size and joint width - use the area shown here with that table.
