How it works

Every unit is defined exactly in square metres, starting from the international foot of 0.3048 m and the acre of 43,560 sq ft. A value is converted to square metres and then to the target unit, so all nine results agree with each other. Regional units whose size is not fixed nationally are left out on purpose.

Method

  • 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m2; 1 sq yd (gaj) = 9 sq ft = 0.83612736 m2
  • 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.8564224 m2
  • 1 hectare = 10,000 m2; 1 sq km = 100 hectares; 1 sq mi = 640 acres
  • 1 cent = 1/100 acre = 435.6 sq ft; 1 guntha = 1/40 acre = 1,089 sq ft

Worked examples

A plot in guntha

Inputs: 5 guntha to square metres

Result: 505.8571 m2 (5,445 sq ft, 605 sq yd, 12.5 cents, 0.125 acre)

5 x 1,089 sq ft = 5,445 sq ft, and 5,445 x 0.09290304 = 505.857 m2.

A 200 gaj house plot

Inputs: 200 sq yd (gaj) to square feet

Result: 1,800 sq ft (167.2255 m2, 4.132231 cents)

One gaj is one square yard, 9 sq ft, so 200 gaj is 1,800 sq ft.

Limitations

  • Regional units whose size varies (bigha, biswa, marla, kanal, ground, ankanam) are excluded rather than guessed.
  • Cent and guntha are taken as the acre fractions used in south and west Indian land records; check the local revenue department if a document defines them differently.
  • It converts a number only - it does not measure a plot or check a listing's stated area.

Where publishers use it

  • Indian property portals listing plots in gaj, cents or guntha
  • Farm and land sales quoting acres and hectares
  • Real-estate agents serving overseas buyers used to square metres
  • Geography and maths lessons on area units

Questions

Why are bigha, marla and kanal not included?

Their size is not fixed nationally. A bigha, for example, ranges from a few thousand to more than 27,000 sq ft depending on the state, and even districts differ, so a single conversion would mislead. Convert them locally, then use this widget for the rest.

Is a gaj the same as a square yard?

Yes. In Indian property listings 1 gaj means 1 square yard, which is 9 sq ft or 0.836 m2.

How big is a cent and a guntha?

A cent is 1/100 of an acre (435.6 sq ft), common in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A guntha is 1/40 of an acre (1,089 sq ft or 121 sq yd), used in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Telangana.

Why do very small results appear in scientific notation?

Converting a floor area into square kilometres or square miles gives tiny numbers. Values below 0.000001 are shown in scientific notation with five significant digits - 1 sq ft is 9.2903e-8 sq km - rather than being rounded to zero.

Does it use the old U.S. survey acre?

No. Every unit is built on the international foot of exactly 0.3048 m. The survey-foot acre differs by only about 4 parts per million, which matters for large land surveys, not for a plot listing.

Basis for 1 ft = 0.3048 m exactly and for defining the acre and square mile in terms of the international foot. No official source was found for cent and guntha; they are the conventional 1/100 and 1/40 of an acre.
