Sports League Table Widget

Type each team's played, won, drawn, lost, goals for and against, and the table does the arithmetic: goal difference, points under the system you choose, the order, and labelled promotion, play-off and relegation zones - in an accessible table that scrolls sideways on phones with the team column fixed.

How it works

Each line is team | played | won | drawn | lost | goals for | goals against, with two optional extra columns: a points figure that replaces the calculated one (for deductions or bonus points) and a rank that fixes the order. Goal difference is goals for minus goals against. Points are won x win points + drawn x draw points + lost x loss points: 3-1-0 by default, 2-1-0 and 4-2-0 as presets, or any custom values from -10 to 10. Teams are sorted by points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then name A-Z. That is a common default only - real competitions use head-to-head records, away goals, play-offs or fair-play points - so a rank column, where present, decides outright and unranked teams follow. Zones are written like 1-2 promotion, 3-6 play-offs, 9-10 relegation; each zone gets a lettered badge, a coloured edge and a legend line, and screen readers hear the zone after the team name. A row whose played total differs from won + drawn + lost is flagged, not hidden.

Method

  • GD = goals for - goals against
  • Points = W x win points + D x draw points + L x loss points (default 3, 1, 0), unless a points value is given
  • Order = rank column if given; otherwise points desc, GD desc, goals for desc, name A-Z
  • Check: played = won + drawn + lost (mismatches are listed in a warning)

Worked examples

Three teams level on points and goal difference

Inputs: Alpha 10 6 2 2 20-10; Bravo 10 6 2 2 18-8; Charlie 10 6 2 2 15-5

Result: 1 Alpha, 2 Bravo, 3 Charlie - all 20 pts, GD +10

Points and goal difference are equal, so goals scored decides: 20 > 18 > 15.

Best goal difference, fewer points

Inputs: Delta 10 6 1 3 30-10 against the three teams above

Result: Delta 4th on 19 pts despite GD +20

Points come before goal difference.

Six-point deduction

Inputs: Alpha ... | 14 (points column); Bravo 10 5 0 5 10-10

Result: Bravo 15 pts above Alpha 14* pts

The points column replaces 6 x 3 + 2 = 20.

Limitations

  • Standings are typed by you; the table does not fetch results or update itself.
  • Head-to-head and other competition-specific tie-breakers are not computed - use the rank column.
  • Up to 60 teams; goals columns are labelled GF and GA even for sports that score points or runs.

Where publishers use it

  • A Sunday-league or five-a-side football club homepage showing the division table after each weekend
  • A school or university intramural sports page with house or faculty standings
  • A local newspaper or community website covering amateur hockey, netball or rugby divisions
  • A darts, pool or quiz league site using 2-1-0 points and a custom title for the season
  • An esports or fantasy league organiser posting weekly standings with promotion and relegation zones

Questions

Which tie-breakers does the table use?

Points first, then goal difference, then goals scored, then team name A-Z. Many football leagues start the same way, but the details differ: some use head-to-head results, away goals, disciplinary points or a play-off before goal difference or after it. If your competition's order differs, add a rank as the ninth column - for example Northgate | 18 | 10 | 5 | 3 | 31 | 19 | | 3 - and ranked teams are listed in that order.

How are points calculated?

Won x 3 + drawn x 1 + lost x 0 by default. Presets cover 2-1-0 (two points for a win) and 4-2-0 (the base of rugby union scoring), and Custom lets you set any win, draw and loss values between -10 and 10. A team with 12 wins, 4 draws and 2 defeats has 12 x 3 + 4 = 40 points under 3-1-0 and 28 under 2-1-0.

How do I show a points deduction or bonus points?

Put the final points in the eighth column. That figure replaces the calculated total, an asterisk appears after the team name, and a footnote says the points were set by the publisher. For example Alpha | 10 | 6 | 2 | 2 | 20 | 10 | 14 shows 14 points instead of 20 after a six-point deduction.

How do I mark promotion and relegation places?

List positions and a label, separated by commas or semicolons: 1 champions; 2-4 Europe qualification; 5-6 play-offs; 18-20 relegation. Each zone gets a badge made from its initials (P, PO, R), a coloured edge and a key line such as Relegation (positions 18-20), so colour is never the only signal. Up to six zones are read; ranges beyond the table are trimmed.

Is the table accessible on phones?

It is a real HTML table with a caption, column headers with full names (P is Played, GD is Goal difference), and each team name as the row header. On narrow screens it scrolls sideways inside a labelled region you can reach with the keyboard, with the position and team columns pinned so you never lose track of the row. A Compact columns option keeps only P, GD and Pts.
