Event Day Weather Widget
Put this next to an event card and attendees see the expected conditions for the event's own hours at its venue - temperature range, rain total and strongest wind - as soon as the date comes within forecast range. Until then it says when to check back, or folds away.

Embed code
<iframe src="https://a2z.tools/embed/w/event-day-weather" title="Event Day Weather by A2Z Tools" width="100%" height="495" style="border:0;width:100%" loading="lazy" allow="clipboard-write"></iframe>
A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.
<div data-a2z-widget="event-day-weather" data-height="495"></div> <script async src="https://a2z.tools/embed.js"></script>
Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.
Works with
How it works
You give the start as wall-clock time, 2026-11-14T19:00, plus the venue's IANA zone and a duration of 1-12 hours (3 if omitted). The start is turned into UTC with that zone's offset on that date; a start inside the spring-forward gap is read with the winter offset and a note says so. If the event has ended the widget says so. If it starts more than five days ahead no request is made and the note reads Forecast available from a date four and a half days before the start. Otherwise it fetches MET Norway's rows and, when the start lies past the last row, dates the note from the real forecast reach. Inside the window it shows the row covering the start (or the present hour once the event has begun), the temperature range over the event, rain or snow as a pro-rata total over the event hours, the strongest 10-minute mean wind, and an hourly strip. A 6-hour step is labelled as such. The beyond option set to collapse folds the frame to zero height until there is a forecast, except in the builder preview.
Method
- Start (UTC) = wall-clock start - zone offset on that date; end = start + duration (1-12 h)
- Ended if now >= end; no request if start - now > 5 days, note date = start - 4.5 days
- Beyond if start >= end of the last forecast row; note date = start - (forecast end - now)
- Window rows = rows overlapping [max(start, now), end); temperature range = min/max of their temperatures
- Rain/snow total = sum of amount x overlap / row period, rounded to 0.1 mm; wind = highest 10-minute mean speed
Worked examples
Summer evening concert in New York
Inputs: start 2026-07-04T21:00, zone America/New_York, 2 hours
Result: Start = 2026-07-05 01:00 UTC; window 01:00-03:00 UTC
New York is on EDT (UTC-4) on 4 July, so 21:00 local is 01:00 UTC the next day; those are the forecast rows used.
An event ten days away
Inputs: start 10 days after now, 3 hours
Result: No request; Forecast available from (start - 4.5 days)
The forecast A2Z holds reaches about five days, so the widget waits and names the date to check back.
An event already under way
Inputs: started 1 hour ago, ends in 2 hours; now 20 minutes past the hour; 0.1 mm per hour
Result: Shows the current hour's row; rain total 0.2 mm
Only what is left counts: 0.1 x 40/60 for the rest of this hour plus 0.1 for the next = 0.167, shown to 0.1 mm as 0.2 mm.
Limitations
- One event and one venue per embed; multi-day events show only the first 12 hours.
- Five-day reach: earlier than that it can only say when to check back, and 6-hour steps make the outlook coarse beyond about 60 hours.
- A forecast, not a guarantee - organisers should follow their national weather service warnings for safety decisions.
- Collapse depends on the A2Z embed.js loader; a plain iframe with a fixed height keeps its space.
Where publishers use it
- A charity fun run or park run page showing race-morning conditions under the start time
- An open-air cinema or theatre listing, one embed per performance with its own start time
- A school sports day or village fete notice so parents know whether to bring sunscreen or wellies
- A wedding website for an outdoor ceremony, set to collapse until the forecast reaches the date
- A food festival event card paired with this widget so attendees see the afternoon's outlook
Questions
When does the forecast appear?
Once the event start is inside the forecast that A2Z holds, which reaches about five days ahead (60 hourly rows plus 6-hour steps). An event on Sunday 20 December 2026 at 19:00 shows Forecast available from Wed 16 December until then. In the last two and a half days before the event the figures are hourly; earlier they come from 6-hour steps and are labelled.
What does the collapse option do?
With v_beyond=collapse the frame reports a height of 0 to the A2Z loader while there is nothing to show - before the forecast reaches the date and after the event has ended - so your page has no empty box. It reappears automatically when a forecast exists (the widget re-checks every 15 minutes). In the builder preview it always shows the note so you can see it works.
Which time zone is the start in?
The venue's, given as an IANA name such as Europe/Dublin or America/Chicago, exactly as in the Event Card. If you leave it blank the visitor's own zone is used and labelled, which is only right when everyone viewing is in the venue's zone - set it for anything with travelling visitors.
Why is a 3-hour event shown with one 6-hour row?
Beyond about 60 hours MET Norway's forecast comes in 6-hour steps (00-06, 06-12, 12-18, 18-24 UTC). The widget then shows the step that contains the start, labelled 6-hour step, and the rain total is the share of that step's amount that overlaps the event hours, assuming it falls evenly.
Does it change as the day approaches?
Yes. MET updates its models several times a day and A2Z re-fetches when MET's Expires time passes, so the figures can shift until the event. The credit line shows the time MET last updated the forecast so a reader can tell how recent it is.
