How it works

Each line total is quantity times unit price. The subtotal is the sum of the lines, the discount is a percentage of the subtotal, and tax is charged on the discounted amount. Every money figure is rounded to the cent at each step, the way an invoice is, so the printed lines always add up to the printed total. The Copy result button produces a plain-text quote listing each item. Publishers can preload their own services through the v_items parameter; it is validated strictly and ignored in full if any entry is malformed.

Method

  • Line total = quantity x unit price (rounded to the cent)
  • Subtotal = sum of line totals
  • Discount = subtotal x discount % (rounded to the cent)
  • Tax = (subtotal - discount) x tax % (rounded to the cent)
  • Total = subtotal - discount + tax

Worked examples

Design package

Inputs: Logo design 1 x 300; business cards 2 x 45; discount 10%; tax 8.25%

Result: Subtotal 390.00; discount 39.00; tax 28.96; total 379.96

Tax is charged on 351.00 after the discount.

Limitations

  • One discount and one tax rate for the whole quote; per-line tax rates or line discounts are not supported.
  • No numbering, validity dates, deposit terms or signature - it is an estimate, not an invoice.

Where publishers use it

  • Web design, photography or cleaning businesses that want visitors to price a package themselves
  • Freelancers sending a rough estimate before a formal proposal
  • Print shops and makers with per-unit pricing and bulk discounts
  • Tutorial pages teaching how discounts and tax combine on an invoice
  • Event caterers, florists and venue hire pages pricing per-head menus and add-ons

Questions

How do I preload my own services?

Use v_items with Name|quantity|price entries separated by semicolons, for example v_items=Logo design|1|300;Business cards|2|45. Up to 8 items; quantities must be above zero and numbers must use a dot for decimals. If any entry is invalid the widget ignores the preset and shows its example items.

Is tax charged before or after the discount?

After: the discount is taken off the subtotal first and tax is charged on the remainder, which is the usual order on invoices.

Is this a legal invoice?

No. It produces a plain-text price quote. A tax invoice usually needs your business details, a number, dates and tax registration details.

Is the quote saved?

No. Items live only on the visitor's page; nothing is stored or sent. Copy the quote before leaving.

Why round every line to the cent?

Because a printed quote must add up. If lines were kept unrounded, three items at 33.333 would total 100.00 while the printed lines show 33.33 each (99.99). Rounding per line, like most invoicing software, keeps the printed sum and the total identical.

Can visitors add their own lines?

Yes, up to eight: each line has a description, a quantity and a unit price, and empty lines are skipped. Only the preloaded v_items list comes from the publisher; anything the visitor types stays on their screen.

Which currency and number format does the quote use?

The currency set in the builder, formatted for its locale - for example 1,234.50 in USD or 1.234,50-style grouping where that locale uses it. Quantities can be decimals such as 1.5 hours, with a dot as the decimal point in v_items.
