CGPA Calculator Widget
Put an SGPA and CGPA calculator on your university or exam-results page. Students add semesters, type each course's credits and grade point, and get every semester's SGPA plus the overall CGPA, computed the credit-weighted way the UGC choice-based credit system prescribes.

A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.
<div data-a2z-widget="cgpa-calculator" data-height="1150"></div> <script async src="https://a2z.tools/embed.js"></script>
Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.
Works with
How it works
For one semester, each course's credits are multiplied by the grade point earned, and the SGPA is the total of those credit points divided by total credits. The CGPA is not a plain average of SGPAs: it divides all credit points from every semester by all credits, so a 26-credit term weighs more than a 20-credit term. This is the procedure in the UGC Guidelines on Adoption of Choice Based Credit System, and the widget reproduces their illustration exactly - six semesters, 1080 credit points over 140 credits, CGPA 7.71. Results are rounded to two decimals only for display, never before combining. The scale switch caps grade points at 10 or 4 and names any course that exceeds it. A semester with no credits yet (for example, audit courses only) shows a dash rather than dividing by zero. Up to 12 semesters of 15 courses each fit, and the layout stays one column on narrow phones.
Calculation method
- SGPA = sum(credits x grade point) / sum(credits) for the semester
- CGPA = sum of all credit points / sum of all credits
- Equivalently CGPA = sum(semester credits x SGPA) / sum(semester credits), with unrounded SGPAs
- Displayed to 2 decimal places
Worked examples
The UGC two-semester start
Inputs: Semester 1: 6x8, 6x7, 2x6, 6x6; Semester 2: 6x6, 6x5, 2x7, 6x9 (credits x grade point)
Result: SGPA 6.90 and 6.70; CGPA 6.80
138 / 20 = 6.9 and 134 / 20 = 6.7; (138 + 134) / 40 = 6.8.
The full UGC illustration
Inputs: Six semesters, 140 credits, 1080 credit points
Result: CGPA 7.71
1080 / 140 = 7.714, displayed as 7.71.
Limitations
- Letter grades are not converted to points automatically, because letter-to-point tables differ between universities; type the grade point.
- Repeated or improved courses are not replaced; remove the older attempt yourself if your university drops it.
- Converting the CGPA into a percentage is a separate, institution-specific step (see the CGPA to percentage widget).
Where publishers use it
- Indian university and autonomous college result pages under CBCS
- Placement-cell sites where recruiters set a minimum CGPA
- Student forums that compare semester results
- Admissions blogs for master's programmes that ask for CGPA on application forms
- International students converting a 4-point transcript into one cumulative figure
Questions
Why is my CGPA not the average of my SGPAs?
Semesters with more credits count more. In the UGC example, semesters of 20, 20, 26, 26, 24 and 24 credits give 1080 credit points over 140 credits = 7.71, while a simple mean of the six SGPAs would give 7.65.
What grade points does a 10-point scale use?
Under the UGC CBCS illustration: O = 10, A+ = 9, A = 8, B+ = 7, B = 6, C = 5, P = 4 and F = 0. Your university may label the letters differently; enter the grade point printed on your mark sheet.
How are zero-credit or audit courses handled?
Enter 0 credits: they add nothing to the credit points or the credit total, so they cannot change the CGPA. A semester made only of such courses shows a dash for SGPA.
Does the 4-point option work for a US transcript?
Yes. Switch to the 4-point scale and enter the quality points per course (A = 4.0, B+ = 3.3 and so on); 3 credits of A and 4 of B give 24 / 7 = 3.43.
Should I round each SGPA before working out the CGPA?
No. Rounding first can shift the second decimal. The widget keeps full precision until the final display, matching the UGC instruction to round SGPA and CGPA to two decimals for the transcript.
What is the difference between SGPA, YGPA and CGPA?
SGPA covers one semester, YGPA (used by some universities) one academic year of two semesters, and CGPA every semester completed so far. All three are the same credit-weighted average over a different set of courses; the consolidated marksheet at graduation carries the final CGPA.
