GPA Calculator Widget

Add a GPA calculator to your school, college or student-advice site. Students list their courses with credits and letter grades, see the term GPA straight away, and can fold in their previous GPA to see the new cumulative figure.

Works with

How it works

Each course's grade is turned into grade points on the chosen scale and multiplied by its credits; the GPA is the total of those quality points divided by the total credits, the same weighted average as the A2Z GPA Calculator page. Zero-credit courses such as pass/fail or audits carry no weight. If a prior cumulative GPA and its credits are entered, the two are combined by credits. Schools that use a 10-point or other numeric scale can switch to typing grade points directly.

Calculation method

  • GPA = sum(grade points x credits) / sum(credits)
  • Cumulative GPA = (prior GPA x prior credits + term quality points) / (prior credits + term credits)
  • 4.0 scale: A/A+ 4.0, A- 3.7, B+ 3.3, B 3.0, B- 2.7, C+ 2.3, C 2.0, C- 1.7, D+ 1.3, D 1.0, D- 0.7, F 0 (optional A+ = 4.3)

Limitations

  • Grading scales differ between institutions (some have no A+, D+ or D-, some give A+ 4.33); the presets are common examples, not any one school's official scale.
  • Honours, AP or IB weighting, repeated-course replacement and pass/fail rules are not applied automatically.
  • The result is rounded to two decimals; registrars may truncate instead (UMD truncates at the third decimal), so the last digit can differ.
  • Percentages are not converted to letter grades; that mapping is set by each school.

Where publishers use it

  • University and college advising pages
  • Scholarship and admissions blogs where applicants check an eligibility cut-off
  • Student-union or tutoring websites
  • High-school counselling pages that explain how GPA is computed

Questions

My school gives A+ a 4.3 - can I use that?

Yes. Choose the 4.0 scale with A+ = 4.3, or pick Grade points and type each course's points exactly as your school defines them.

Does it work for a 10-point CGPA?

Yes. Choose Grade points and enter the grade point of each course (for example 9.2); the weighted average is the same formula.

Why is my official GPA slightly different?

Institutions differ in how they round, whether repeated courses replace old grades and which courses count. Treat the result as a check, and your registrar's figure as final.

Can I set the grading scale for my site?

Yes, preset it in the builder (v_scale=pm, pm43, plain or points).
