Enter a three-digit area code, a phone number or a place to see the state or province, the time zone and the local time there now.

What the Area Code Lookup does

This lookup tells you which US state, Canadian province or Caribbean country a North American area code belongs to, which time zone it is in and what time it is there right now. Type 212 and you get New York (Manhattan), Eastern time; paste a whole number such as +1 (416) 555-0199 and the page picks out the area code 416 - Toronto, Ontario - for you.

You can also go the other way: type a state or province, such as Texas or ON, to list every area code it uses. The list covers the 460-plus geographic codes of the North American Numbering Plan, compiled from NANPA and CNAC publications and dated on the page. The lookup runs in your browser; the number you type is not sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type a three-digit area code, paste a phone number in any common format (with or without +1, brackets, dots or dashes, even letters such as 1-800-FLOWERS), or type a state, province or country name or its two-letter abbreviation.
  2. Read the place, the country and the time zone. The local time updates while the page is open, and codes that cross a time-zone line show each zone.
  3. Check the notes: other area codes that share the same area (overlays), whether the code is toll-free or reserved, and whether the number is a fictional 555 number.
  4. Use Browse every area code to filter the whole list, or download it as CSV with its review date.

Reading the results

An area code shows where a number was originally assigned. It does not show where the caller is: people keep their numbers when they move, switch carriers (number porting) and use mobile and internet phones anywhere. Treat the place as a hint about origin, never as a location or an identity.

Overlays mean one area can have several codes - Manhattan has 212, 646, 332 and 917 - so neighbours can have different area codes. That is why ten-digit dialling is now required almost everywhere.

Some +1 area codes are in other countries, such as 876 (Jamaica) and 809 (Dominican Republic). Calling them is an international call even though it looks domestic; unexpected missed calls from such codes are a known callback-scam pattern, so do not return calls you do not recognise.

Toll-free codes (800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888) and other non-geographic codes have no location or time zone at all.

Worked example: a missed call from (305) 555-0142

The page strips the brackets and dash, finds ten digits and splits them into area code 305, exchange 555 and line 0142.

305 is Florida - all of Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys - in the Eastern time zone, overlaid by 786 and 645. At 17:00 UTC in January it is 12:00 noon there (EST, UTC−5).

It also notes that 555-0100 to 555-0199 are reserved for fiction and examples, so this particular number cannot ring a real phone - and that even a real 305 number may belong to someone who now lives elsewhere.

How North American phone numbers are built

Every number in the North American Numbering Plan has ten digits after the country code +1: a three-digit area code (NPA), a three-digit exchange (NXX) and a four-digit line number. Neither the area code nor the exchange may start with 0 or 1, and codes ending in 11, such as 911 and 411, are reserved for services. Codes with 9 as the middle digit are held back for expanding the plan in the future.

The plan covers the United States and its territories, Canada, Bermuda and much of the Caribbean. Their numbers look alike, but they are separate countries with their own carriers, rates and rules. NANPA administers the plan; in Canada, codes are administered by the Canadian Numbering Administrator (CNA).

Where the data comes from

The code-to-region list follows NANPA's area code reports and CNAC's Canadian area code maps. NANPA's site refused automated access on the review date, so the list was transcribed from a public compilation of those reports and every Canadian code was checked against the CNAC map. The time zones are a2z.tools' own assignment from the region and known zone boundaries. The review date is shown on the page; new overlays are announced every year, so check NANPA for anything critical.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • An area code never identifies a person, a carrier or where a caller is. Numbers are ported, kept after moving, and used on mobile and internet phones anywhere.
  • The list is a dated snapshot. Newly announced overlays and relief codes may be missing or marked planned until the next review.
  • Time zones are by area code. Where a code crosses a zone line, the exact zone depends on the town, which this page cannot know from the code.
  • Only the +1 North American Numbering Plan is covered. For other countries' codes use an international dialling code lookup.

Frequently asked questions

What state is this area code from?

Type the three digits and the page shows the state or province, the country and the area it covers - for example 713 is Houston, Texas, and 604 is Vancouver, British Columbia. Remember that the number's owner may no longer live there.

Can an area code tell me who is calling or where they are?

No. An area code only shows where the number was first issued. People keep numbers when they move or switch carriers, and mobile and internet numbers work anywhere, so it cannot identify the caller, their carrier or their current location.

Which area codes are in Canada?

Type Canada or a province - Ontario, BC, Quebec - to list them. Toronto uses 416, 647, 437 and 942; Montreal 514, 438 and 263; Vancouver 604, 778, 236 and 672. The list is checked against the Canadian Numbering Administrator's map.

Why does one city have several area codes?

When a region runs out of numbers, a new code is overlaid on the same area instead of splitting it, so existing customers keep their numbers. New lines get the new code, which is why neighbours can have different area codes and why you must dial all ten digits.

Is 876 or 809 a US area code?

No. 876 is Jamaica and 809, 829 and 849 are the Dominican Republic. They use the +1 country code like the US, but calls to them are international and usually cost more. Be wary of returning unexpected missed calls from them.

What time is it in area code 907?

907 is Alaska, which mostly uses Alaska time (UTC−9, UTC−8 in summer); the western Aleutian Islands are an hour behind. Type 907 and the page shows the current local time for each zone, worked out by your browser.

Is a 555 phone number real?

Numbers from 555-0100 to 555-0199 are reserved for films, TV and examples and never connect. Other 555 numbers were historically used for directory and information services; the page flags the fictional range when you paste a number.
