What gets moved and what does not

Only the root note of a chord changes, and its bass note if it has one. Everything else is carried through untouched: Cm7 becomes Dm7, Cmaj7 becomes Dmaj7, Csus4 becomes Dsus4, and C/G becomes D/A. The quality is never interpreted, which means unusual extensions - m7b5, add9, 13#11 - survive perfectly well without the tool needing to understand them.

Your lyrics are safe

This is the part most transposers get wrong. "A" is a chord. It is also a word. So is "E" in some contexts, and a naive transposer turns "A hard day" into "B hard day".

The rule here is that a line is only treated as a chord line when every token on it parses as a chord. A line of lyrics containing the word "A" is prose and is returned exactly as you typed it, including its spacing. Blank lines survive too, so a chord sheet keeps its shape.

Sharps or flats

Which spelling is correct depends on the target key. Transposing up a semitone from C gives C sharp in a sharp key and D flat in a flat key - the same pitch, but only one of them reads correctly to a musician. Name your target key and the tool follows its signature; work in semitones instead and it defaults to sharps.
