Works with

How it works

The widget writes a standard vCard 3.0 record - the format phones and address books import - and encodes it as a QR code. Commas, semicolons, backslashes and line breaks inside values are escaped as RFC 2426 requires, so an address such as "12 MG Road, Floor 3" does not split into the wrong fields. Phone numbers are reduced to digits and an optional leading +, websites get https:// added when it is missing, and obviously incomplete emails or phone numbers are flagged before the code is drawn. Because a contact card holds more data than a link, the code is denser; keep the printed size at 2 cm or more.

Method

  • Record: BEGIN:VCARD, VERSION:3.0, N:last;first;;;, FN:full name ... END:VCARD, lines joined by CRLF
  • Optional lines: ORG, TITLE, TEL;TYPE=CELL, TEL;TYPE=WORK, EMAIL;TYPE=INTERNET, URL, ADR;TYPE=WORK:;;street;city;region;postcode;country
  • Escaping (RFC 2426): \ -> \\, newline -> \n, ; -> \;, , -> \,
  • Text is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, so names in any script are kept
  • Phone numbers reduced to digits with an optional leading +; websites without a scheme get https://; only http(s) links accepted

Limitations

  • One work address, one mobile and one work number, one email and one website; extra numbers, home addresses, birthdays and notes are not included.
  • No photo or logo is embedded - an image would make the code far too dense to scan.
  • Lines are not folded at 75 octets as RFC 2426 recommends; phone scanners read unfolded lines, but a strict desktop importer might not.
  • Phone numbers are not checked against any national numbering plan - include the country code so the contact dials correctly abroad.
  • Some older Android scanner apps expect MECARD instead of vCard; the built-in cameras of current Android and iOS read vCard 3.0.

Where publishers use it

  • Business-card and printing websites letting customers add a scan-to-save contact code
  • Conference and trade-show sites producing codes for attendee badges
  • Real-estate agents and sales teams adding a contact code to flyers and property boards
  • Company intranets where staff make a code for their email signature or desk sign

Questions

What happens when someone scans it?

The phone camera shows a contact preview with the name, numbers and email, and offers to add it to the address book. Nothing opens a website.

Why is the code so dense?

A contact card contains much more text than a link. Leave out fields you do not need, or print the code larger, to make it easier to scan.

Can I use non-English names?

Yes. The card is encoded as UTF-8, which modern iPhone and Android cameras read correctly for names in any script.

Is my information stored?

No. The card is built and encoded inside your browser; A2Z never receives it.

  2. RFC 6350 - vCard Format Specification (vCard 4.0) - IETF . the current version; 3.0 is used because phone cameras import it most reliably
