How it works

The drop-down holds 51 jurisdictions, each with the general rate shown on its revenue agency's site, the address of that page, the date the rate started where the agency publishes one, and the day A2Z re-read it. In the default mode the price is treated as pre-tax: tax = price x rate, rounded half-up to the cent, and total = price + tax, so $49.99 in Arkansas at 6.5% gives $3.25 of tax. In tax-inclusive mode the widget divides by (1 + rate) and rounds the pre-tax price to the cent; the tax is the remainder, so $107.25 in California splits into $100.00 and $7.25. Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon return a zero state rate with a note on what they tax instead. Where a state levies a local share in every location, the figure is that statewide minimum: California 7.25%, Utah 6.1% (4.85% state plus 1.25% local) and Virginia 5.3%. No other county, city or district rate is ever added, because those depend on the exact delivery or store address.

Calculation method

  • State tax = round(price x state rate / 100, 2), rounding half-up
  • Total = price + state tax
  • Tax-inclusive: pre-tax price = round(total / (1 + state rate / 100), 2); state tax = total - pre-tax price

Worked examples

Texas, price before tax

Inputs: State TX; price $100.00; mode add tax

Result: Total $106.25 (state tax $6.25 at 6.25%)

100 x 6.25% = 6.25.

California, tax-inclusive total

Inputs: State CA; price $107.25; mode tax-inclusive

Result: Price before tax $100.00; state tax inside $7.25

107.25 / 1.0725 = 100.00.

Arkansas, rounding to the cent

Inputs: State AR; price $49.99; mode add tax

Result: Total $53.24 (state tax $3.25 at 6.5%)

49.99 x 0.065 = 3.24935, which rounds half-up to 3.25.

An estimate of state-level tax for general information, not tax advice; local taxes and product exemptions are not included.

Limitations

  • State-level rates only: no county, city or special-district taxes, which can add several percentage points.
  • One general rate per state: reduced rates for food, vehicles, lodging or digital goods are not modelled.
  • Rounding is half-up per sale; a few states round by bracket tables that can differ by a cent.
  • Rates change: each one shows the day it was last verified. Ten official pages (including Ohio, Utah and Rhode Island) refused automated checks on that day and were read from an Internet Archive copy, which the widget names with its capture date.

Where publishers use it

  • An online store's checkout help page showing the state portion before the address-level rate is known
  • A personal-finance blog comparing the sticker price of a laptop across Tennessee, Oregon and New York
  • A relocation site listing which states charge no statewide sales tax
  • A bookkeeping firm's client portal backing the state tax out of receipts that show only a total
  • A car-buying guide explaining why the state rate is only the floor of the tax on a purchase

Questions

Which states have no statewide sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon. Alaska lets boroughs and cities levy their own sales taxes, Delaware taxes businesses' gross receipts, and New Hampshire taxes meals and rooms, so prices there are not always tax-free.

Why is my receipt's rate higher than the one shown?

Most states let counties, cities and transit or special districts add their own rates, so the combined rate depends on the address. The widget shows only the state base; use the state's own rate lookup for an exact address.

Why does California show 7.25%?

The California Department of Tax and Fee Administration publishes 7.25% as the statewide rate - the rate that applies everywhere in California. In most areas local district taxes are added on top of it.

How is tax taken out of a tax-inclusive price?

Divide the total by 1 plus the rate. At 6.25% in Texas, $106.25 / 1.0625 = $100.00 before tax, so the tax inside is $6.25.

Are groceries and clothing taxed at these rates?

Not always. Many states exempt or reduce the rate on groceries, prescription drugs or clothing; the widget applies the general rate to whatever price is entered.
