How it works

The annual salary (monthly x 12, weekly x 52, or hourly x hours x 52) first loses any salary-sacrifice pension. The personal allowance is £12,570, cut by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income over £100,000, so it reaches zero at £125,140; a numeric tax code such as 1100L replaces it with 1,100 x 10 = £11,000. Taxable income is taxed through the bands HMRC publishes for employers: 20% up to £37,700, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, or Scotland's six bands from 19% to 48%. Employee Class 1 National Insurance is 8% between £12,570 and £50,270 and 2% above. Student loans take 9% over the lowest chosen plan threshold (Plan 1 £26,900, Plan 2 £29,385, Plan 4 £33,795, Plan 5 £25,000) and a Postgraduate Loan another 6% over £21,000. A net pay pension leaves before income tax only; relief at source is paid at 80% from net pay while the provider adds 20%, and any higher-rate relief to reclaim is shown separately.

Calculation method

  • Allowance = 12,570 - floor((adjusted net income - 100,000) / 2), minimum 0; tax code nnnnL -> allowance = nnnn x 10, no taper
  • Taxable = floor(pay for tax - allowance); rUK: 20% to 37,700, 40% to 125,140, 45% above
  • Scotland: 19% to 3,967, 20% to 16,956, 21% to 31,092, 42% to 62,430, 45% to 125,140, 48% above (taxable income)
  • Employee NI = 8% x (min(pay, 50,270) - 12,570) + 2% x (pay - 50,270), each part floored at 0
  • Student loan = 9% x (pay - lowest plan threshold); Postgraduate = 6% x (pay - 21,000)
  • Salary sacrifice: pay = gross - P for tax, NI and loans; net pay: tax on gross - P, NI and loans on gross; relief at source: tax, NI, loans on gross, 0.8 x P from net pay
  • Relief-at-source extra claim = tax(gross) - tax(gross - P) - 20% x P, floored at 0

Worked examples

Basic-rate salary in England

Inputs: £30,000 a year, England, no pension, no student loan

Result: Take-home £25,119.60 a year (£2,093.30 a month): income tax £3,486.00, NI £1,394.40

Taxable £17,430 x 20% = £3,486; NI 8% x (£30,000 - £12,570) = £1,394.40.

The £100,000 taper

Inputs: £110,000 a year, England, no pension

Result: Take-home £72,357.40: allowance £7,570, income tax £33,432.00, NI £4,210.60

Allowance falls by £5,000; taxable £102,430 = £37,700 x 20% + £64,730 x 40%.

Scottish bands

Inputs: £50,000 a year, Scotland, no pension

Result: Income tax £8,982.05, NI £2,994.40, take-home £38,023.55

£3,967 x 19% + £12,989 x 20% + £14,136 x 21% + £6,338 x 42% on taxable £37,430.

Salary sacrifice vs net pay

Inputs: £40,000, England, 5% pension

Result: Sacrifice: take-home £30,879.60; net pay or relief at source: £30,719.60

Sacrifice saves 8% NI on the £2,000 contribution (£160).

An estimate of UK income tax and deductions for planning, not tax or financial advice. Your payslip and HMRC's records decide what you actually pay.

Limitations

  • One employment with the same pay all year; bonuses, second jobs, savings and rental income are not included.
  • Benefits in kind, Marriage Allowance, Blind Person's Allowance, K, BR, D0, D1, NT and emergency codes are not modelled.
  • Higher-rate relief on relief-at-source pensions is shown as a claim, not added to take-home pay; Scottish relief-at-source claims are approximated at marginal rates.
  • Figures are for the 2026-27 tax year only and need updating each April.

Where publishers use it

  • A UK recruitment agency's job advert showing what a £42,000 role pays each month after deductions
  • A Scottish employer's careers page comparing take-home pay under Scottish and rUK bands
  • A university careers service explaining how a Plan 2 or Plan 5 loan and a Postgraduate Loan both come out of a graduate salary
  • An HR intranet page illustrating why a salary-sacrifice pension leaves more money than relief at source
  • A personal-finance blog post about the 60% tax trap between £100,000 and £125,140

Questions

Why does take-home pay fall so sharply between £100,000 and £125,140?

The personal allowance shrinks by £1 for every £2 earned over £100,000, so each extra £1 is taxed at 40% and also pulls 50p of allowance into the 40% band - an effective 60% income tax rate (plus 2% NI) until the allowance is gone at £125,140. A salary-sacrifice or net pay pension reduces the income used for the taper.

How do the Scottish bands differ in 2026-27?

Scottish taxpayers pay 19% on the first £3,967 of taxable income, 20% to £16,956, 21% to £31,092, 42% to £62,430, 45% to £125,140 and 48% above. On a £30,000 salary that is £3,451.07 of income tax against £3,486 in England - but on £50,000 it is £8,982.05 against £7,486.

What is the difference between the three pension methods?

Salary sacrifice lowers your pay, so income tax, National Insurance and student loan repayments all fall. A net pay arrangement takes the contribution before income tax but not before NI. With relief at source you pay 80% of the contribution from net pay and the provider claims 20% from HMRC; higher-rate taxpayers claim the rest. On £40,000 with 5%, sacrifice leaves £30,879.60 and the other two £30,719.60 - the £160 gap is NI.

I have Plan 1 and Plan 2 loans - do I repay twice?

No. You repay 9% of income over the lowest threshold of the plans you hold (£26,900 for Plan 1), and the repayment is shared between the loans. A Postgraduate Loan is different: 6% over £21,000 is taken at the same time, on top.

Which tax codes can I enter?

Numeric codes such as 1257L, 1100L, S1257L (Scottish), C1257L (Welsh) and 0T. K codes, BR, D0, D1, NT and emergency week 1 / month 1 codes are not modelled - the widget says so instead of guessing.

Why might my payslip differ slightly?

Payroll calculates each pay period separately with period thresholds (for example a £1,048 monthly NI threshold) and rounds student loan deductions down to whole pounds, while this widget works on the year and spreads it evenly.
