Store Locator List Widget

List every branch of your chain by region with address, opening hours, a one-tap Directions button, Apple Maps link and Call button. Above six branches a filter box finds a branch by town or postcode start, and region chips narrow the list.

Works with

How it works

Write one branch per line - name, address, phone, hours text and an optional branch page - and start regions with ## lines such as ## London or ## Scotland. There is no embedded map and no API key: Directions opens Google Maps with the documented api=1&destination= URL carrying the encoded address, and a small Apple Maps link uses maps.apple.com/?daddr= for iPhone owners. Phone numbers are reduced to digits with an optional plus and must have 4 to 15 digits before a tel: Call button appears; the button shows the number itself, so desktop visitors can read it. With more than six branches the first four are shown with a Show all button, and a filter appears. It matches the start of words, so manch finds Manchester and sw4 finds a London SW4 address; a postcode typed with its space (SW4 0A) is matched against neighbouring words joined together. A nearest-first sort is deliberately absent: the frame's Permissions-Policy disables geolocation, so the browser would refuse the request.

Method

  • Line: branch | address | phone | hours text | https link ; "## Region" starts a region
  • Directions = https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=<RFC 3986 encoded address>; Apple = https://maps.apple.com/?daddr=<same>
  • Call = tel:<digits> when the phone, without spaces ( ) . -, matches ^\+?\d{4,15}$
  • Filter: every query word must start some word of name + address + region, OR the query without spaces must start two neighbouring words joined (postcodes)
  • More than 6 branches: show 4 + "Show all N branches"; any filter or region chip shows every match

Worked examples

Directions link

Inputs: Greenleaf Camden | 41 Linden Parade, Camden, London NW1 7AA | 020 7946 0101

Result: https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=41%20Linden%20Parade%2C%20Camden%2C%20London%20NW1%207AA ; Call tel:02079460101

Commas become %2C and spaces %20; the phone loses its spaces.

Postcode filter

Inputs: Sample list of 7 branches, filter "SW4 0A"

Result: 1 of 7 branches: Greenleaf Clapham

sw4 + 0aa are joined to sw40aa, which starts with sw40a.

Town filter

Inputs: Sample list, filter "london"

Result: 3 of 7 branches (Camden, Clapham, Greenwich)

Every query word must start a word of the branch name, address or region.

Limitations

  • No map and no distance sorting: geolocation is blocked inside A2Z frames by Permissions-Policy, so visitors filter by town or postcode instead.
  • Addresses are not geocoded or checked; a typo goes straight into the Directions link.
  • Hours are plain text per branch, without a live open or closed status.
  • The filter matches word starts, not misspellings - Edinbrugh finds nothing.

Where publishers use it

  • An optician, pharmacy or bakery chain with a dozen shops across several towns
  • A franchise's Find your nearest studio page on a gym or tutoring brand site
  • A bank, building society or car-rental firm listing branch phone numbers and hours
  • A charity listing its shops or drop-off points by county
  • A landing page in a paid campaign where a map API key and its billing are not wanted

Questions

Why is there no Near me button?

Because it cannot work inside this frame. A2Z serves every widget with the header Permissions-Policy: geolocation=(), and under the W3C Permissions Policy an empty allowlist disables the feature for the document and every nested document, whatever the host page's iframe allow attribute says. Rather than show a button that always fails, the widget offers the town and postcode filter, which needs no permission and reveals nothing about the visitor.

How does the postcode filter match?

It compares the start of words. Typing sw4 matches an address containing SW4 0AA; typing SW4 0A also matches, because the filter joins neighbouring words (sw4 + 0aa = sw40aa) and checks that the query without spaces starts one of those pairs. Partial towns work the same way - edin finds Edinburgh. Accents are ignored, so zur finds Zurich written as Zürich.

Do I need a Google Maps API key?

No. The Directions button is a plain link in the Maps URLs format (https://www.google.com/maps/dir/?api=1&destination=...), which Google documents as working without a key and opens the Google Maps app on phones that have it. Nothing is drawn by Google inside the widget, so there is no billing account, quota or cookie banner to worry about.

What should go in the hours column?

A short human line such as Mon-Sat 9:00-18:00, Sun 11:00-16:00 (up to 140 characters). It is shown as written. If you need a live Open now or Closed status for one branch, use the Business Hours widget on that branch's own page.

How many branches can it hold?

Up to 150 lines. Regions appear in the order of their ## headings, and when there are more than six branches the region chips and the filter box appear automatically; set the search option to on or off to override that. Long lists stay quick because filtering only hides list items, it never rebuilds the page.

Can the list point to each branch's own page?

Yes - the fifth column takes an https link that becomes a Branch page button opening in a new tab. Pages with your own LocalBusiness structured data are where search engines look for branch details, so linking to them also helps visitors who want parking or accessibility information.
