How it works

Each unit is held as its exact size in watts and a conversion multiplies by the source size and divides by the target size, so no rounded intermediate creeps in. The factors are the NIST SP 811 ones: one international-table BTU per hour is 0.2930711 W, so 1 kW is 3,412.142 BTU/h; a ton of refrigeration is defined as 12,000 BTU/h, or 3.516853 kW; MBH is a thousand BTU/h. Kilocalories per hour use the international-table calorie of 4.1868 J, which makes 1 kcal/h exactly 1.163 W - the convention of European and Asian chiller catalogues. Mechanical horsepower (550 ft.lbf/s) is 745.6999 W and boiler horsepower, still used for steam and hot-water boilers, is 9,809.5 W. The answer is shown with sensible precision, alongside BTU/h, tons, kW and kcal/h for the same figure.

Method

  • result = value x size(from) / size(to), with every size in watts
  • 1 BTU_IT/h = 1055.05585262 J / 3600 s = 0.2930711 W; 1 kW = 3,412.142 BTU/h
  • 1 ton of refrigeration (TR) = 12,000 BTU/h = 3,516.853 W; 1 MBH = 1,000 BTU/h
  • 1 kcal_IT/h = 4,186.8 J / 3600 s = 1.163 W
  • 1 hp (550 ft.lbf/s) = 745.6999 W; 1 boiler horsepower = 9,809.50 W

Worked examples

A 24,000 BTU/h mini-split

Inputs: 24,000 BTU/h to tons

Result: 2 TR; 7.034 kW; 6,048 kcal/h

Two tons - the usual size for a large open-plan living area in a hot climate.

A 3.5 kW wall split

Inputs: 3.5 kW to BTU/h

Result: 11,942 BTU/h; 0.995 TR; 3,009 kcal/h

The European 3.5 kW class is the North American '12k' class.

A 10,000 kcal/h package unit

Inputs: 10,000 kcal/h to kW

Result: 11.63 kW; 39,683 BTU/h; 3.307 TR

kcal/h ratings convert with the 1.163 W factor.

Limitations

  • Converts capacity (a heat rate) only; it does not convert efficiency ratings such as EER, SEER, COP or kW per ton.
  • Nameplate capacities are measured at standard rating conditions; real output changes with outdoor temperature and humidity.
  • Refrigeration tons are the US/IT definition (12,000 BTU/h); the rarely used metric or Japanese refrigeration tons are not included.

Where publishers use it

  • Split-system and mini-split product pages that list capacity in BTU/h for one market and kW for another
  • Chiller and cooling-tower quotes where an engineer needs tons of refrigeration next to kW
  • Boiler retrofit articles translating boiler horsepower and MBH ratings into kW
  • HVAC apprentice and refrigeration-course pages that drill the 12,000 BTU/h ton
  • Import listings of Asian air conditioners rated in kcal/h

Questions

Why is a ton of cooling 12,000 BTU/h?

It is the heat needed to melt one short ton (2,000 lb) of ice in 24 hours: about 144 BTU per pound x 2,000 lb / 24 h = 12,000 BTU/h. NIST SP 811 lists the ton of refrigeration as exactly 12,000 BTU_IT/h, which is 3.516853 kW.

Is a 3.5 kW split unit the same as a 12,000 BTU unit?

Nearly: 3.5 kW is 11,942 BTU/h and 0.995 tons. Model names are rounded marketing labels, so compare the rated capacity in kW or BTU/h on the specification sheet rather than the '12k' or '35' in the model number.

Does a 2-ton air conditioner draw 7 kW of electricity?

No. 2 tons (24,000 BTU/h, 7.034 kW) is the cooling it delivers. The electricity it draws is that capacity divided by its efficiency: at an EER of 12 BTU/Wh it uses about 2 kW.

Which kilocalorie does it use?

The international-table kilocalorie, 4,186.8 J, so 1 kcal/h = 1.163 W and 10,000 kcal/h = 11.63 kW. The thermochemical kilocalorie (4,184 J) would give results 0.07% lower - negligible for equipment sizing.

What is boiler horsepower?

A steam-boiler rating equal to 9,809.5 W (33,471 BTU/h), about 13 times a mechanical horsepower. Do not mix it up with the 745.7 W horsepower printed on motor and compressor plates.

What does MBH mean on a furnace or boiler plate?

Thousands of BTU per hour (the M is the Roman thousand), so an 80 MBH furnace delivers 80,000 BTU/h, or 23.45 kW.

NIST has no kcal per hour row; 1 kcal_IT/h = 4186.8 J / 3600 s = 1.163 W is derived from the kilocalorie_IT.
