Final Grade Calculator Widget

Add a final grade calculator to your class or study-tips page. Students enter their current grade, how much the final is worth and the grade they want, and see the score they need - along with the targets they have already secured or cannot reach.

Works with

How it works

The current grade is treated as the weighted average of all work before the final, so it carries the remaining share of the course. Solving the weighted-average equation for the final exam score gives the formula below, the same one the A2Z Final Grade Calculator page uses. The widget also shows the course grade you would end with after a 0 and after a 100 on the final, and a small table of the scores needed for 90, 80, 70 and 60.

Calculation method

  • Needed = (target - current x (1 - w)) / w, where w = final weight / 100
  • Worst case = current x (1 - w); best case = current x (1 - w) + 100 x w
  • Above 100% = not reachable without extra credit; 0% or below = already secured

Worked examples

Holding on to a B+

Inputs: Current 84%, final worth 30%, target 85%

Result: 87.33% needed; worst case 58.8%, best case 88.8%

(85 - 84 x 0.7) / 0.3 = 26.2 / 0.3 = 87.33. The table adds 90% (104%, not reachable), 80% (70.7%), 70% (37.3%) and 60% (4%).

A target out of reach

Inputs: Current 72%, final worth 20%, target 80%

Result: 112% needed - not reachable; best case 77.6%

Even 100 on a 20% final lifts 72 only to 77.6, so the widget points to 70% (62% needed) instead.

Limitations

  • Assumes the current grade already weights everything except the final; dropped-lowest-score rules and curves are not modelled.
  • Letter-grade boundaries are not applied - it works in percentages only.
  • Extra credit above 100% on the final is not assumed; results over 100% are simply marked as not reachable.
  • Some courses also demand a minimum mark on the exam itself (say 40%) whatever the overall average; that separate hurdle is not checked.

Where publishers use it

  • Teachers' class pages before exam season
  • Study-skills and exam-planning blogs
  • University course sites that publish the grade weighting
  • Tutoring services helping students set revision priorities

Questions

What should I enter as my current grade?

Your weighted average for everything graded so far, before the final - the figure most learning platforms show as the running course grade.

What does a result above 100% mean?

Even a perfect final would not lift you to the target, because the final's weight is too small to make up the gap. The table shows which lower targets are still possible.

What if my course has several remaining assessments?

Combine them into one weight if they are graded together, or treat your current grade as including everything except the final exam.

Does it round like my school?

It shows two decimal places. Schools have their own rounding and grade boundaries, so check your syllabus.
