Footer Legal Links Widget

Add a tidy row of footer links - privacy policy, terms, cookie policy, accessibility statement, imprint, sitemap - separated by dots or bars, with an optional copyright line at the end. It inherits your footer's font and colour, so it looks hand-built.

One small script from A2Z draws the component on your page inside its own Shadow DOM. It loads no social-network or tracking scripts and sets no cookies. How the A2Z kit works.

Works with

How it works

You list one link per line as 'Label | URL'. Each address must be https, http or mailto, or a path on your own site starting with a single slash such as /privacy; javascript:, data: and protocol-relative addresses are refused, and a line that fails is simply left out. The links are drawn as a list inside a nav landmark named 'Legal' (rename it if you like), with separators that screen readers skip. The link to the page being viewed is marked aria-current="page" and shown in bold. An optional closing line can include {year}, which becomes the current year. The default theme inherits your footer's text colour and font.

Method

  • Line format: Label | URL (label up to 60 characters, at most 20 links)
  • Accepted URLs: https:, http:, mailto: and same-site paths starting with one '/'; everything else drops the line
  • Separators: middle dot, vertical bar or none, rendered aria-hidden
  • Current page: same origin and same path (trailing slash ignored) -> aria-current="page"
  • {year} in the closing line -> the visitor's current year

Worked examples

Default row

Inputs: The five example lines, dot separators

Result: Privacy policy · Terms of service · Cookie policy · Accessibility · Sitemap

Each label is a link; the dots are hidden from screen readers.

A hostile line is dropped

Inputs: Lines 'Privacy | /privacy' and 'Win a prize | javascript:alert(1)'

Result: Only 'Privacy' is shown, linking to /privacy on your site

javascript: is not an accepted scheme, so that line never becomes a link.

Closing line with the year

Inputs: Closing text '© {year} Riverside Cafe', in 2026

Result: © 2026 Riverside Cafe after the links

{year} is replaced with the visitor's current year.

Limitations

  • The widget cannot tell whether the pages you link to exist or are up to date.
  • At most 20 links; labels over 60 characters are cut.

Where publishers use it

  • A small business moving its privacy policy and terms links out of a cluttered menu into a clean footer row
  • A German or Austrian site listing its Impressum and Datenschutz pages beside the copyright line
  • A static landing page built in a page builder that has no footer menu feature
  • An agency template where the same footer row is pasted on every client site and only the URLs change

Questions

Does adding these links make my site legally compliant?

No. The widget only displays links. Whether you need a privacy policy, cookie policy, imprint or accessibility statement - and what it must say - depends on your business and jurisdiction; ask a qualified adviser.

Can I use relative links like /privacy?

Yes. A path starting with a single slash is kept as it is and resolved by the browser against your own site. Protocol-relative addresses (//example.com) are refused because they can point anywhere.

Why don't the links open in a new tab?

Footer links lead to pages of your own site, and opening them in a new tab breaks the Back button and surprises screen-reader users. Visitors who want a new tab can still middle-click or long-press.

How do I add a copyright line that updates itself?

Use the closing text option with {year}, for example © {year} Riverside Cafe, or place the Auto-updating Copyright Year widget for a start-year range.
