How it works

The table holds, for each of the 27 Member States, the standard rate and the reduced rates (super-reduced rates under 5% and Luxembourg's 14% parking rate included) that the Member State reports to the European Commission's Taxes in Europe Database (TEDB), with TEDB's latest situation date. Regional rates such as Madeira's 22%, the Azores' 16% or Corsica's special rates are listed separately, and recent standard-rate changes are named - Finland 24% to 25.5% (September 2024), Slovakia 20% to 23% (January 2025), Estonia 22% to 24% (July 2025) and Romania 19% to 21% (August 2025). The calculator applies the chosen rate to the cent: adding VAT, 100.00 at Ireland's 23% gives 23.00 VAT and 123.00 gross; removing it, 125.50 at Finland's 25.5% gives 100.00 net. Unlike the general VAT calculator, which offers UK presets and any typed rate, every rate here is a dated EU figure, and a reduced rate that a country does not have is refused rather than guessed.

Calculation method

  • Add VAT: VAT = round(net x rate / 100, 2); gross = net + VAT
  • Remove VAT: net = round(gross / (1 + rate / 100), 2); VAT = gross - net
  • Rounding: to the cent, half away from zero
  • Rates: TEDB VAT search for the 27 Member States, latest situation date per state; regional rates (Article 104 and similar) kept apart

Worked examples

Add Irish VAT

Inputs: Ireland, standard rate, add VAT to 100.00

Result: Price including VAT 123.00 - VAT 23.00 at 23%

100.00 x 23 / 100 = 23.00.

Take Finnish VAT out

Inputs: Finland, standard rate, gross 125.50

Result: Price excluding VAT 100.00 - VAT 25.50 at 25.5%

125.50 / 1.255 = 100.00.

German reduced rate

Inputs: Germany, highest reduced rate, net 19.99

Result: Price including VAT 21.39 - VAT 1.40 at 7%

19.99 x 7% = 1.3993, rounded to 1.40.

An illustration of published rates, not tax advice. Which rate applies depends on the goods or service and the transaction; check with the national tax authority or an adviser.

Limitations

  • It cannot tell which rate applies to a particular product or service - reduced and zero rates cover only the supplies each country lists.
  • Rates are as reported by the Member States to TEDB, with the situation date shown; a change made after that date appears only when the file is updated.
  • Exemptions, reverse charge, margin schemes and the OSS threshold calculation are not modelled.

Where publishers use it

  • An ecommerce help page showing EU customers which VAT rate their country charges
  • A SaaS pricing page footnote listing standard rates for EU consumers billed at their own country's rate
  • An accountancy firm's resource page with a sortable table of all 27 standard and reduced rates
  • A marketplace seller guide comparing Hungary's 27% with Luxembourg's 17% before setting gross prices
  • A travel or relocation site's country guide showing local VAT rates

Questions

Which country's rate applies to an online sale?

For sales of goods shipped to consumers in another Member State, and for telecom, broadcasting and electronic services, VAT is generally due in the customer's Member State once the seller's EU-wide total of such sales passes EUR 10,000 a year; the One Stop Shop (OSS) lets the seller declare it in one return. Business-to-business sales follow different rules.

Why does one country have several reduced rates?

The VAT Directive lets each Member State apply up to two reduced rates of at least 5% to listed goods and services, plus a super-reduced rate below 5% and a zero rate for a short list of basic needs. France, for example, reports 10%, 5.5% and 2.1%; Denmark reports no reduced rate at all.

What does the date in the table mean?

It is the latest situation date the Member State has in TEDB - the date on which the rates were reported as in force. Most states show 1 July 2026; Cyprus and Portugal show 1 January 2026 and Greece 1 January 2025, so check their tax authorities for anything newer.

Which rates changed recently?

Finland's standard rate rose from 24% to 25.5% (TEDB from 1 September 2024), Slovakia's from 20% to 23% (1 January 2025), Estonia's from 22% to 24% (1 July 2025) and Romania's from 19% to 21% (1 August 2025). Austria reports a new 4.9% rate for listed foodstuffs from 1 July 2026.

How is this different from the VAT calculator?

The general VAT calculator has UK presets and accepts any rate you type. This widget is EU-specific: every rate comes from the dated Commission table, it covers all 27 Member States side by side, and it explains regional rates and recent changes.

Are Northern Ireland, the Canary Islands or Switzerland included?

No. The table lists the national VAT rates of the 27 Member States only, as reported to TEDB. Rates for territories outside the EU VAT area and for non-EU countries such as Switzerland and Norway are not included, and the regional rates shown are limited to those TEDB lists as regional.
