How it works
The widget carries a compact list of about 250 country codes taken from the ITU-T E.164 assigned codes list, checked on 2026-10-01, including territories that share a code (Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man under +44, Christmas Island under +61) and global services such as +800 freephone and +870 Inmarsat. Places in the North American Numbering Plan all use +1 and are listed with their area code, so Jamaica appears as +1 876 and Puerto Rico as +1 787 and +1 939. Searching is forgiving: names ignore accents and case, and common aliases such as UK, USA, Holland or Ivory Coast work. Typing digits looks up codes instead - exact matches first, then longer codes that start with those digits - and a whole pasted number such as +44 20 7946 0000 finds its code. The 'calling from' choice changes the exit prefix in each dialling line: + on a mobile, 00 from most countries, 011 from the US and Canada, 0011 from Australia, 010 from Japan.
Method
- Data: ITU-T E.164 assigned country codes (checked 2026-10-01); NANP places listed as 1 + area code
- Name search: accent-folded, exact name or alias first, then names starting with the text, then word and substring matches
- Digit search: exact code, then longer codes beginning with the digits, else the code a full number begins with
- Dialling line: exit prefix + country code + national number without its trunk 0 (kept for Italy, San Marino, Vatican)

Jamaica's newer area code 658 is listed as a second entry.
Limitations
- Country codes only: it does not validate full phone numbers or show local number lengths.
- Exit prefixes cover the most common cases; a few countries use carrier-specific international prefixes.
- NANP area codes come from the North American Numbering Plan, not from the ITU list.

Questions
Do I drop the 0 at the start of the number?
Usually yes. Many countries use a leading 0 as a domestic trunk prefix that is omitted after the country code: London's 020 7946 0000 becomes +44 20 7946 0000. Italy, San Marino and Vatican City are the main exceptions - their numbers keep the 0 after +39 or +378.
What is the exit code?
The prefix that tells your phone network the next digits are a country code. It is 00 in most of the world, 011 in the US, Canada and other +1 places, 0011 in Australia and 010 in Japan. On a mobile you can always type + instead.
Why do the US, Canada and Jamaica share +1?
They are all in the North American Numbering Plan, one numbering zone with ITU code 1. The three-digit area code tells them apart, which is why this list shows Jamaica as +1 876 and the Bahamas as +1 242.
Why do Russia and Kazakhstan both use +7?
Code 7 was assigned to the Soviet Union and is still shared; Kazakhstan's numbers begin with 6 or 7 after the code, Russia's with other digits.
What are codes like +800 and +870?
Global services rather than countries: +800 is the International Freephone Service, +808 International Shared Cost, +870 Inmarsat satellite phones and +881 global mobile satellite systems.
How current is the list?
It follows the ITU-T E.164 list of assigned country codes as checked on 2026-10-01. Changes are rare; +383 for Kosovo is one of the most recent additions.
