Cat Age Calculator Widget
Show cat owners how old their cat is in people terms and which life stage it has reached - kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior or super senior - using the chart International Cat Care publishes. Years and months are typed separately, so a 7-month-old kitten is as easy as a 15-year-old.

A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.

Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.

How it works
International Cat Care equates the first two years of a cat's life with about 24 human years and every year after that with about 4. The widget uses the chart's fixed points - 6 months is 10, one year is 15, two years is 24 - joins them with straight lines, and from the second birthday adds 4 human years per cat year, so 6 years gives 40, 10 gives 56 and 20 gives 96. Months are added to the years as twelfths. The life stage comes from the same charity's six bands: kitten to 6 months, junior from 7 months to 2 years, adult 3-6, mature 7-10, senior 11-14 and super senior from 15. Ages between bands (for example 2 years 6 months) stay in the earlier stage until the next whole-year boundary. The result card also tells the reader when the next stage begins, which is handy for planning senior check-ups.
Calculation method
- Age in years = years + months / 12
- Human-equivalent: 0-0.5 y: 20 x age; 0.5-1 y: 10 + (age - 0.5) x 10; 1-2 y: 15 + (age - 1) x 9; over 2 y: 24 + (age - 2) x 4
- Stage: kitten under 7 months, junior to 3 years, adult 3-6, mature 7-10, senior 11-14, super senior 15 and over
Worked examples
Ten-year-old cat
Inputs: 10 years, 0 months
Result: 56 human years; mature; senior at 11 years
24 + 8 x 4 = 56.
Six-month kitten
Inputs: 0 years, 6 months
Result: 10 human years; kitten; junior at 7 months
The chart's first fixed point.
An informational estimate based on published guidance, not veterinary advice or a diagnosis. Every animal is different - ask your veterinarian about your pet's health, diet and care.
Limitations
- Under six months the conversion is a straight line from birth rather than a published chart value.
- The chart describes an average cat; breed, size and health are not taken into account.
Where publishers use it
- A cat-food brand's life-stage page explaining why kitten and senior recipes differ
- A feline-only veterinary clinic's reminder page for mature and senior health checks
- A cattery or rescue listing that shows adopters the human-equivalent age of each cat
- A pet blog post on the six feline life stages
- A cat-insurance site describing how cover changes from the mature stage onward
Questions
Does one cat year equal seven human years?
No. A cat grows up very fast: International Cat Care puts a 1-year-old at about 15 human years and a 2-year-old at about 24. After that the pace slows to about 4 human years per cat year, so a 10-year-old cat is about 56, not 70.
How old is a 15-year-old cat in human years?
About 76 on the chart: 24 for the first two years plus 13 x 4 = 52. At 15 a cat enters the super senior band, which the same charity starts at 15 years.
What are the cat life stages?
International Cat Care uses six: kitten (0-6 months), junior (7 months to 2 years), adult (3-6 years), mature (7-10 years), senior (11-14 years) and super senior (15 years and over). Each stage brings different nutrition and health-screening priorities.
How do I enter a kitten's age?
Put 0 in the years box and the number of months in the second box. Six months gives 10 human years; below six months the widget draws a straight line from birth, so treat very young ages as rough.
Why is the answer a whole number?
The chart itself is given in whole human years and the 4-years-per-year rule is an approximation. Showing decimals would suggest a precision the method does not have, so the result is rounded to the nearest year.
Do indoor cats age differently?
The chart does not distinguish indoor and outdoor cats; it describes typical development. Lifestyle affects health and life expectancy, but the human-equivalent age for a given birthday is the same.
