What the Minutes to Hours Converter does

This converter turns minutes into hours - both as hours and minutes (135 minutes = 2 h 15 min) and as decimal hours for a timesheet or invoice (135 minutes = 2.25 hours). It also converts decimal hours back to hours and minutes, adds up a whole list of durations, and rounds to a tenth or a quarter of an hour with the rule shown.

The arithmetic is just division by 60, but decimal hours catch people out: 1.30 hours is 1 hour 18 minutes, not 1 hour 30. Type durations the way you would write them - 90, 1:30, 1h 30m, 2 hrs 5 mins - and everything is converted in your browser without anything being sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Type a duration. A plain number is read as minutes; switch "A plain number means" to decimal hours to convert 7.75 into 7 h 45 min.
  2. Read the answer: decimal hours in large type, hours and minutes next to it, and an h:mm form for spreadsheets.
  3. To bill or fill in a timesheet, choose a rounding step - a tenth of an hour (6 minutes) or a quarter hour (15 minutes) - and whether to round to the nearest step, always up or always down.
  4. To total a day or a week, paste one duration per line into the list box. Labels such as "Monday:" are kept, and lines the converter cannot read are listed rather than silently dropped.
  5. Add an hourly rate if you want the pay or the invoice amount, then copy the result or download the entries as CSV.

Reading the results

Decimal hours are fractions of 60, not of 100. 0.5 h is 30 minutes, 0.25 h is 15 minutes, 0.1 h is 6 minutes and 0.01 h is 36 seconds, so 7.30 on a timesheet means 7 hours 18 minutes.

Two decimal places are normal for timesheets, which means some values are rounded: 20 minutes is 0.3333... hours, shown as 0.33. When you multiply by a pay rate the tool uses the unrounded value unless you have chosen a billing step.

Billing steps are applied to each entry before the total, the way most timesheet and invoicing systems do it. Rounding each entry up to a tenth adds an average of about three minutes per entry, which is why the rule matters on long lists.

Totals over 24 hours stay as hours ("31 h 15 min") rather than turning into days, because that is what payroll and invoices expect.

Worked example: a week's timesheet, rounded to the quarter hour

The entries are Monday 7 h 45 min (465 min), Tuesday 8:10 (490 min), Wednesday 465 min, Thursday 7 hrs 52 mins (472 min) and Friday 6:38 (398 min). Unrounded, that is 2,290 minutes, and 2,290 / 60 = 38.17 hours, or 38 h 10 min.

Rounded to the nearest quarter hour: 465 is exactly 31 quarters and stays. 490 is 32 quarters plus 10 minutes; 10 is more than 7, so it rounds up to 495. 472 is 31 quarters plus 7 minutes, which rounds down to 465. 398 is 26 quarters plus 8 minutes, which rounds up to 405.

The rounded total is 465 + 495 + 465 + 465 + 405 = 2,295 minutes = 38.25 hours - five minutes more than was worked, because two entries rounded up and one rounded down.

At 22.50 an hour the rounded pay is 38.25 x 22.50 = 860.63. Without rounding it would be 38.1667 x 22.50 = 858.75.

Limitations: what the result does not prove

  • Whether rounding is allowed, and in which direction, depends on your contract, employer policy and local labour law. The tool applies the rule you choose; it does not tell you which rule you are entitled to.
  • It converts durations, not clock times. To work out hours between a start and an end time, including breaks and overnight shifts, use a timesheet calculator first and paste the durations here.
  • Overtime, break deductions and pay premiums are not calculated. The pay figure is a plain hours-times-rate product.
  • Seconds are kept in conversions but most timesheets drop them; the 2-decimal display may differ from a system that truncates rather than rounds.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 135 minutes / 60 = 2.25 hours. For hours and minutes, the whole number is the hours and the remainder is the minutes: 135 = 2 x 60 + 15, so 2 hours 15 minutes.

What is 45 minutes in decimal hours?

0.75 hours, because 45 / 60 = 0.75. Other common ones: 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.5, 20 minutes is 0.33, 40 minutes is 0.67, 50 minutes is 0.83 and 6 minutes is 0.1. The chart under the result lists every minute from 1 to 60.

How do I convert decimal hours back to hours and minutes?

Keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60. 7.75 hours is 7 hours and 0.75 x 60 = 45 minutes. 8.2 hours is 8 hours and 0.2 x 60 = 12 minutes. Switch "A plain number means" to decimal hours and type the figure to see it.

Is 1.30 hours the same as 1 hour 30 minutes?

No. 1.30 decimal hours is 1 hour plus 0.30 x 60 = 18 minutes. One hour thirty minutes is 1.5 hours. Mixing the two is the most common timesheet mistake, so write hours and minutes as 1:30 and decimal hours as 1.5.

How does rounding to the nearest quarter hour work?

Each time is rounded to the nearest 15 minutes: 1 to 7 minutes past a quarter rounds down and 8 to 14 minutes rounds up. 7 h 52 min becomes 7 h 45 min and 6 h 38 min becomes 6 h 45 min. US federal guidance (29 CFR 785.48) permits this only when it averages out fairly over time.

What does billing in tenths of an hour mean?

Time is charged in 6-minute units, because 6 minutes is 0.1 of an hour. Many professional firms round each task up to the next tenth, so a 2-minute call is billed as 0.1 h and a 47-minute task as 0.8 h. Choose "Tenth of an hour" and "Always up" to reproduce that.

How do I add up hours and minutes?

Convert everything to minutes, add, then convert back. Paste one duration per line into the list box - 7h 45m, 8:10, 465 - and the total appears in decimal hours and in hours and minutes, with each line shown in the table.
