Tip Calculator Widget
Add a tip calculator to your restaurant, travel or lifestyle site. Diners enter the bill, the tip percentage and the number of people, and see the tip, the total and what each person pays - rounded up to a whole amount if they prefer.

A plain iframe. Works everywhere, including site builders that strip scripts. Adjust height if your content needs more room.
<div data-a2z-widget="tip-calculator" data-height="450"></div> <script async src="https://a2z.tools/embed.js"></script>
Adds a small script (what it does) that sizes the widget to fit its content, loads it lazily and keeps it isolated from your page's CSS.
Works with
How it works
The tip is the bill times the tip percentage, and the total is split evenly between the people at the table, exactly as on the A2Z Tip Calculator. With rounding switched on, each share is rounded up to the next whole unit of the currency and the tip absorbs the difference, so the widget shows the real tip percentage that results rather than pretending it is still the one entered.
Calculation method
- Tip = bill x tip % / 100
- Total = bill + tip; each share = total / people
- Rounded: share = ceiling(total / people); tip = share x people - bill
Worked examples
Two diners, no rounding
Inputs: Bill 86.40; tip 15%; 2 people
Result: Tip 12.96; total 99.36; each pays 49.68
12.96 is 6.48 of tip per person.
Three diners, rounded up
Inputs: Bill 86.40; tip 18%; 3 people; round up
Result: Each pays 34.00; total 102.00; tip 15.60 (18.06%)
Rounding adds 0.05 to the tip.
Limitations
- Splits evenly; it cannot give one person a larger share for what they ordered.
- Holds no country tipping guide - customs differ widely and change, so the reader picks the percentage.
- Rounds shares up to whole currency units only; rounding to the nearest 5 or to cash denominations is not offered.
Where publishers use it
- Travel guides explaining tipping customs in a destination
- Restaurant and bar websites next to the menu or group-booking page
- Personal-finance articles on budgeting for eating out
- Wedding and event-planning blogs splitting group dinners
- Cruise, safari and tour-operator pages advising guests how to budget gratuities for guides and crew
- Salon, spa and ride-hailing explainers answering what a customary gratuity comes to in money
Questions
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Customs differ. Many US diners tip on the pre-tax amount; enter whichever figure you want the percentage applied to.
What does rounding up do?
Each person's share is rounded up to a whole unit (for example from 49.68 to 50), and the extra goes to the tip. The widget shows the resulting tip percentage.
Can I set a default tip percentage?
Yes. Preset v_tip in the builder, for example 18 or 20.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. The calculation runs in the visitor's browser.
How does rounding change the tip for three people?
On an 86.40 bill with an 18% tip, each share is 33.98 before rounding. Rounded up to 34.00 each, the table pays 102.00, a tip of 15.60 or 18.06% of the bill - the widget reports that real percentage.
What if a service charge is already on the bill?
Some restaurants add a service charge, especially for groups. Check the bill: if one is included, a further tip is optional, so set the tip to 0 or a small extra and split the rest.
Should I tip on the full bill when using a voucher or discount?
Many diners tip on the undiscounted amount, because the service was the same. Enter the pre-discount total as the bill if that is your practice.
How do I handle a separate bar tab or delivery fee?
Tip is usually on the food and drink, not on a delivery or booking fee. Enter only the amount you want the percentage applied to, then add the fee to each person's share yourself.
Is the tip calculated on the total including tax?
Only if you enter that total. For the tip on the pre-tax subtotal, enter the food-and-drink figure before tax; the difference on an 86.40 bill with 8% tax is about 1 at 15%.
