How it works

Fees are taken on the selling price: a payment fee percentage plus a fixed amount per order, and a marketplace commission percentage that you enter yourself, because platform fee schedules change and differ by category. Returns are handled as an expected cost. With a 5% return rate, 5% of orders are refunded and the item is assumed restocked, so the product margin is earned on 95% of orders, while shipping, fees and ad spend are lost on every order. A 40 item costing 12, with 5 shipping, 2.9% + 0.30 payment fee, 15% marketplace fee, 6 of ads and 5% returns leaves 8.14 profit, a 20.3% margin. Break-even ROAS is price divided by profit before ads (40 / 14.14 = 2.83): below that ad return every sale loses money. Units for a target divide it by profit per order and round up.

Calculation method

  • Fees = price x (payment % + marketplace %) + fixed payment fee
  • Profit before ads = (1 - return rate) x (price - product cost) - shipping - fees
  • Profit per order = profit before ads - ad cost per sale; margin = profit / price
  • Break-even ROAS = price / profit before ads; orders for target = ceil(target / profit)

Worked examples

Marketplace product

Inputs: Price 40; cost 12; shipping 5; payment 2.9% + 0.30; marketplace 15%; ads 6; returns 5%; target 5,000

Result: Profit 8.14 per order; margin 20.3%; break-even ROAS 2.83x; 615 orders for 5,000

Fees 7.46; profit before ads 14.14.

Own store, no ads

Inputs: Price 100; cost 40; everything else 0; target 6,000

Result: Profit 60.00; margin 60%; break-even ROAS 1.67x; 100 orders

With no fees, all of the 60 gross profit is kept.

An estimate for planning, not financial advice; fees are the figures you enter and tax is not included.

Limitations

  • Per order with one item; bundles, multi-item baskets and tiered shipping need average figures.
  • No sales tax or VAT, storage fees, chargebacks or currency conversion unless included in your inputs.

Where publishers use it

  • Ecommerce and dropshipping blogs checking unit economics before launching a product
  • Marketplace-seller communities comparing listing a product on several platforms
  • Shopify app and theme sites helping merchants price new lines
  • Performance-marketing agencies explaining why a 2x ROAS can still lose money
  • Product-sourcing guides deciding whether a supplier quote leaves enough margin
  • Handmade-goods sellers and print-on-demand stores pricing mugs, posters or apparel
  • Kickstarter-style launch planners checking per-unit economics before a production run

Questions

What is break-even ROAS?

The return on ad spend at which profit is exactly zero: price divided by the profit before advertising. If that is 2.83, every 1 of ads must bring 2.83 of sales; at 2.5 the product loses money on each ad-driven order.

How are returns counted?

Returned items are assumed refunded and restocked, so you lose the margin on those orders but recover the product. Shipping, fees and ad spend are treated as lost. If returned goods cannot be resold, add the loss to the product cost.

Which marketplace fee should I use?

Your platform's referral or commission rate for the category, plus any fulfilment fee converted to a percentage or added to shipping. The widget has no built-in fee tables.

Why is the margin based on the selling price?

It matches gross margin as retailers use it. 8.14 profit on a 40 sale is a 20.35% margin, displayed as 20.3%.

How many orders reach a 5,000 profit?

At 8.14 per order, 5,000 / 8.14 = 614.3, so 615 orders. If profit per order is zero or negative, the target is shown as not reachable.

How do fulfilment programmes change the result?

Marketplace fulfilment services charge pick, pack and storage per unit. Add the per-unit fulfilment fee to shipping, and spread monthly warehousing or long-term storage surcharges over the units sold that month.

Is ad cost per sale the same as customer acquisition cost?

Not quite. Ad cost per sale is spend divided by attributed orders. When buyers reorder without ads, lifetime value can justify a first-order loss; this widget deliberately shows the single-order view so that bet is explicit.

How do coupons and free delivery fit in?

Enter the price after the coupon as the selling price, and when you offer free delivery put the full courier label cost in shipping. A 10% coupon on a 40 item lowers the price to 36 - and the percentage fees fall with it.
