How it works

Ovulation is estimated the same way as on the A2Z Ovulation Calculator: by counting back the luteal phase (14 days unless the visitor knows theirs) from the expected next period, because the luteal phase varies less than the first half of the cycle. The fertile window is the six days ending on the estimated ovulation day - the interval in which Wilcox, Weinberg and Baird's 1995 NEJM study of 221 women observed every conception, with the chance rising from about 10% five days before ovulation to about 33% on the day itself. The table starts from the cycle containing today, so an older period date still gives useful upcoming dates, and it assumes the cycle stays the same length. It is calendar arithmetic only and says so: it is not contraception and not a fertility test.

Calculation method

  • Next period = period start + cycle length (21-45 days accepted)
  • Estimated ovulation = next period - luteal phase (default 14 days, accepted 10-17)
  • Fertile window = ovulation - 5 days to the ovulation day (six days, Wilcox 1995)
  • Cycles shown: the one containing today and the next two, at the same length; whole calendar days in UTC

Worked examples

28-day cycle

Inputs: Period started 2026-03-01, cycle 28, luteal 14, checked on 2026-03-05

Result: Ovulation 15 March; fertile window 10 to 15 March; next period 29 March

29 March - 14 days = 15 March; the window is the five days before plus the day itself.

An estimate for general information only - not medical advice, not contraception and not a fertility test. Talk to a doctor about fertility or cycle concerns.

Limitations

  • Stress, illness, breastfeeding, PCOS, recent hormonal contraception and some medicines move ovulation; none of these is modelled.
  • Cycles outside 21-45 days and luteal phases outside 10-17 days are refused rather than estimated.
  • Gives no probability of conception and no information about fertility problems.

Where publishers use it

  • Fertility, trying-to-conceive and women's health websites
  • Gynaecology and fertility-clinic patient information pages
  • Period and cycle-tracking blogs that explain the phases of the cycle
  • Health-education material on how the menstrual cycle works

Questions

Can this be used as contraception?

No. Calendar estimates cannot predict ovulation reliably enough to prevent pregnancy. The widget states this with every result.

What if my cycle is irregular?

The estimate assumes a regular cycle, so it becomes much less reliable when cycle length varies. Ovulation predictor kits or basal body temperature tracking give a direct sign, and a doctor can help with very irregular cycles.

What is the luteal phase?

The days from ovulation to the next period, typically 12 to 16. Leaving the field at 14 is fine if it is unknown.

Why does the fertile window end on ovulation day?

In the Wilcox study, conceptions came only from intercourse in the six days ending on the day of ovulation; none were attributed to intercourse after it. Sperm can survive several days, while the egg is short-lived.
