How it works

CPM is the cost of 1,000 impressions (the M is the Roman numeral for a thousand). Cost, CPM and impressions are tied by one relation, so any one can be solved from the other two. The widget uses the same solver as the A2Z CPM, CPC and CPA Calculator and also shows the cost of a single impression, which makes quotes from different sellers easier to compare.

Calculation method

  • C = campaign cost, M = CPM (price per 1,000 impressions), I = impressions
  • Cost C = M x I / 1000; CPM M = C x 1000 / I; impressions I = C / M x 1000
  • Cost per impression = C / I, shown to 5 decimals because it is usually a fraction of a cent
  • Money is shown to 2 decimals and impressions to the nearest whole number; nothing is rounded before the division

Worked examples

Pricing a sponsorship from a rate card

Inputs: Calculate campaign cost; CPM 6.00; impressions 250,000

Result: Campaign cost 1,500.00; cost per impression 0.00600

250,000 / 1,000 = 250 blocks of a thousand, each at 6.00.

How far a budget goes at a higher CPM

Inputs: Calculate impressions; campaign cost 1,500; CPM 12.50

Result: 120,000 impressions; cost per impression 0.01250

Doubling the CPM from 6.25 to 12.50 halves the impressions the same budget buys.

Comparing an offer quoted as a flat fee

Inputs: Calculate CPM; campaign cost 450; impressions 180,000

Result: CPM 2.50

A flat 450 for 180,000 impressions works out at 2.50 per thousand, which can then be set against other sellers' CPMs.

Limitations

  • What counts as an impression differs by seller: Google's viewable CPM (vCPM) counts only viewable impressions, while a newsletter or podcast CPM may be based on sends, opens or downloads. Compare quotes only on the same unit.
  • Auction CPMs change hour to hour with competition, targeting and season; the widget solves the arithmetic for one rate, it does not predict what an auction will charge.
  • Impressions are not unique people. Frequency caps, repeat exposure and bot or invalid traffic filtering are outside this calculation.

Where publishers use it

  • Publishers' advertise-with-us pages, so buyers can price a campaign at the quoted CPM
  • Media-planning guides comparing display, video and podcast inventory
  • Influencer and newsletter sponsorship pages that sell on a CPM basis
  • Marketing classes introducing paid-media metrics

Questions

What does CPM stand for?

Cost per mille - cost per thousand impressions. A 6.00 CPM means 1,000 ad impressions cost 6.00.

How many impressions will my budget buy?

Choose Impressions, enter the budget and the CPM. At a 5.00 CPM, 1,000 buys 200,000 impressions.

Is an impression the same as reach?

No. Impressions count every time the ad is shown, including repeat views by the same person; reach counts unique people.

Can I preset my rate card CPM?

Yes. Set v_solve=cost and preset v_cpm so buyers only enter impressions.

How do I compare a CPM deal with a CPC deal?

Convert both to the same unit. With an expected click-through rate, effective CPC = CPM / (1000 x CTR): a 6.00 CPM at a 0.5% CTR is 1.20 per click. The CPC Calculator shows CTR and CPM from real campaign totals.

Why do podcast and newsletter CPMs look so much higher than display?

They are usually priced per download or per send to an engaged audience, often with a host read or dedicated placement, so a 25.00 podcast CPM and a 3.00 banner CPM are not buying the same thing.
