A different expiry from the SSL one

This is the domain registration itself expiring - the underlying right to use the name at all - not the SSL certificate that secures connections to it. A site can have a perfectly valid certificate right up until the domain underneath it lapses and stops resolving anywhere at all.

What actually happens near expiry

Registrars do not typically let a domain vanish the instant its expiry date passes - there is usually a renewal grace period, followed by a redemption period at a steep premium, before the name is finally released back for anyone to register. The exact windows vary by registry and are not something RDAP's expiry event reports - it tells you the date, not the registrar's specific grace-period policy.

Why this is worth checking on domains you do not manage yourself

A domain that quietly lapses and is re-registered by someone else is a well-documented way legitimate-looking sites get hijacked or repurposed - worth a periodic glance at any domain a business depends on but does not directly control the registration for.
